If there are significant risks on a building site, the order in which the control measures are followed is an important part of the risk management procedure.

Order these six steps for risk control measures from highest priority to lowest priority:

When you think you have these in the correct order, check your answer against the one shown below:

  1. Eliminate the hazard.
  2. Substitute a less hazardous substance or tool.
  3. Isolate the substance from employees.
  4. Use engineering controls such as local exhaust fans.
  5. Use administrative controls such as restricting access to a work area.
  6. Use personal protective equipment (also called PPE).

The hazard identification, risk assessment and control process should be carried out so that all workers are informed about the process and are aware of the hazards and risks on the building site.
